Whether a choo-choo newbie or all-round locomotive enthusiast, you can’t deny that Dovetail Games’ Train Sim World series is one of the most detailed train sims out there. Train Sim World first released on Xbox in 2018. Train Sim World 2 graced our shores in 2020. And 2022’s Train Sim World 3 provided the most up to date experience. You can bet that we’ve taken it all in. As well as the countless DLCs to boot. And now, we have the first word on the Train Sim World 4 release date on Xbox, PlayStation and PC!
New Trains and Routes
The latest and greatest in the Train Sim World franchise, the fourth instalment will have more trains and routes than even the most passionate of train fans could ask for. Most notably, the series is venturing to Austria for the first time. We’ll be able to explore the S-Bahn Vorarlberg Line and take in beautiful Austrian locales.
The rapid Azuma train and American Metrolink’s F125 route are also making their way over to the game, as is a simpler HUD and easier to drive vehicles, perfect for newcomers to the series.
We are yet to know if the DLC from previous Train Sim World games will carry over to this new title. If we get any word on this, we will of course let you know.
The Flying Scotsman!
Perhaps the most famous train in the entire world, the iconic Flying Scotsman is also being included in Train Sim World 4.
Restricted to those with the Deluxe Edition of the game, many will find absolute joy in taking it for a ride along the East Coast Main Line. It is the train’s centenary year, after all!
Executive Producer Matt Peddlesden: “With all new train operators, all new trains and even a new country, combined with significant new ways to play and enjoy your train collection, it’s really exciting to see how much control and creativity Train Sim World 4 is putting into the hands of players. As an avid railfan myself I’m really excited for this release and I can’t wait to see what players do with it!”
Free Roam and Photo Mode
The addition of Free Roam and Photo Mode are huge features set to arrive in the game. Free Roam will give players the ability to play in a sandbox mode, spawning trains and setting routes. Photo Mode will allow pausing of the live action to set angles and filters up for the perfect railfan shots.
And as you would expect, controller haptics, revised scoring and further graphical improvements to lighting and weather also form part of the release and the popular creative tools Livery Designer and Scenario Planner each get an overhaul.
Ambitious PC users will even be able to access the new PC Editor in beta. This will mean they can unlock the same Unreal Engine tools that Dovetail Games use. From there, it should be a cinch to create gameplay, routes and trains from scratch.
For the less ambitious and those new to the franchise, a simpler HUD will be in place. As will easier-to-drive locomotives in the Training Center. Further UI changes make driving trains in Train Sim World easier than ever before.
When’s the Train Sim World 4 Release Date?
Mark the date in your calendars. Train Sim World 4 is slated for release on Xbox, PlayStation and PC consoles on September 26th, 2023. Not long to go then!

As a TSW player on Xbox my primary question is will TSW4 be on Game Pass?
No confirmation yet, but would be amazed if it’s not at some point, especially seeing as TSW3 dropped into Game Pass Day One.
